Manual transmissions - the precautions
If you’ve already checked out our page on the benefits of manual transmissions, you’re probably wondering what the flip side is. Read on to learn about the precautions you should take when caring for and operating your manual transmission vehicle.
Practice makes perfect
If you’re new to driving a manual transmission vehicle, make sure you get some practice or advice from a friend or experienced technician like the ones here at our shop. Don’t drive in conditions that you’re uncomfortable with (i.e. on a steep hill) until you’ve learned how to operate your stick shift with precision and less-than-occasional stalling.
Leave repair to the professionals
You probably know by now that manual transmissions are a good deal more simple than their automatic counterparts. But that doesn’t mean that you should take repair or maintenance into your own hands, especially not using any aftermarket kits. We’ve got a great supply of warrantied, original transmission parts here at our shop and our technicians have several years of experience in performing manual transmission repair work.
Know your stuff
Get familiar with common terms related to your manual transmission vehicle – you’ll find a few helpful tips in some of the other pages in our advice section. Unfortunately, some shops will try to take advantage of you by replacing parts that are perfectly fine or, for example, replacing your transmission fluid when it’s not necessary. Knowing how to do basic troubleshooting of your transmission on your own will help keep you in the loop.
